We will start with the engine just as


the spark plug is igniting the fuel/air mixture –

As the piston is forced downwards in the cylinder it uncovers the exhaust port in


the side wall. As soon as the piston reaches this position the exhaust gas immediately escapes into the exhaust system –

After the a two stroke engine expels the exhaust gases it still has some remaining kinetic energy from the force of the ignited gases and continues working downwards downwards. Now the piston covers the inlet port. With the inlet port closed the bottom section of the engine is now airtight (the crankcase – the housing in which the flywheel and crankshaft assembly are located). As the piston moves downwards it increases pressure inside the crankcase, the only place for the fuel/2 stroke oil/air mixture to escape would be up into the transfer port –
